Occupation* | Henry Alfred Leaman was a "of the firm C.A. Lehmann and Co." in 1905 at Fremantle, Western AustraliaG.4 |
Note* | Changed his name by deed poll from Lehmann to Leaman before or during WWI P0 Box 13 Caltowie SA 5490 0l March 2004 Dear Neil, Many thanks for contacting mc recently and taking an interest in our family history. I have included several reports on his family but I have still have many gaps. I cannot locate any members of his daughters Mavis, Pamela and Roma families. Henry went to WA in 1903 on the 'SS Kalgoorlie a 7 day trip. After a job in the Dept of Lands he worked with his brother CA Lehmann selling fertiliser but soon became involved with the export of flour, chaff, and grain. in 1911 they joined in business with T.Ockerby but soon this was dissolved. CA and Henry then formed Farmers Coop Grain and Chaff Milling Co. Unlike SA which was settled by many Germans WA bad seen few of them and they were suspicious of them once the war began. In the 1914/1915 season they had as usual booked up many tons of grain with farmers. A severe drought in that year prompted the Govt of the day to allow farmers to dishonour these contracts. Then the local price of wheat jumped and the brothers had to buy at the high local price to fill their contracts which were written at a lower price. Although the firm survived this it failed several years later. They changed the spelling of their name in 1914/1915. Henry worked until he was 77years old and spent 36 years with the firm Burridge and Warren. The leg injured in 1905 was amputated about 1972. CA Leaman came to WA in 1901 and after a very disappointing business life died in Melbourne in 1940. He at one stage led the biggest chaff business in the Sthn Hemisphere. From Henrys notes, the following. "The Chamberlain family came from England about 1850. Their ship foundered in Cockburn Sound and the people aboard managed to get to the shore somewhere near Ten Mile Rocks. They were menaced by natives but using mirrors to flash the sunlight in their eyes, frightened them off'. Neil thank you again for the material and good luck with your research into the family Yours Sincerely Peter Lehmann.1 |
