Owing probably to the pathetic circumstances, together wlth the popu- larity of the late Leading Signalman, Irwln James Chamberlain, R.A.N., the funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon last with naval honors, was one of the largest witnessed in Fre- mantle for many years. The deceased, who had Just reached his 23rd year, was born in Fremantle, and was a son of Mr. Charles Chamberlain, an old and respected identity of the Port. He had chosen a naval career, and was to have proceeded in a few weeks to the Eastern States to complete Ins course so as to become a chief petty officer. His brother, Gordon, is on active ser- vice at the Dardanelles. The long na- val cortege, headed by the firing party, moved from the residence of his parents, in Price-street, Fremantle, and preceded to the local cemetery where the remains were Interred in the Church of England portion. The casket, enshrouded with the Union Jack, was borne to the graveside by Yeomen Signalmen H'Callum, Lewis, Davey, Butchardt, and Bluejackets Tuxford and Ridley (of the Naval Re- serves). The naval chaplain, the Rev. Canon R. H. Moore, who conducted the servlce at the graveside, also delivered a most impressive and appropriate address, in the presence of over one thousand people. The M.U. I.O.O.F, service was read by Bro. H. Flindell, P.G.M., W.A.D, The religious ceremony was concluded by the sing- ing of a verse of deceased's favorite hymn, 'Lead, Kindly Light.' The three volleys were then fired, and the Last Post sounded. The order of cortege was:— The firing party of twenty-six bluejackets of Naval Reserve, and a bugler, under Chief Petty Officer Scorey; the Implement Works Band, which, under the conduc- torship of Mr. Roy C. Davies, render- ed Handel's Dead March in 'Saul' en route; the hearse and bearers, and the mourners, which were composed of Senior Naval Cadets, under Chief Petty Officers Lane, Johnson and Mul- bearn. The parade, which consisted of over 200 Naval Reserves, was under 'the supervision of Lieut. C. T. Norris, who also represented Captain Clare, R.A.N., District Naval Officer. Others present were: Captain Anderson (re- presenting Major Griffiths; CO., (R.A. G.A., Fremantle), Commander C. J. Irvine, R.A.N.R. .(Chief. Harbormas- ter), the Minister for Public Works, Mr. W. C. Angwin, M.L.A., Sergeant F. W. Harper (10th Light Horse), Mr. Geo. Sinclair representing Harbor and Lights Depariment, Bro. H. A. Her- bert (secretary), T. R. Cook (P.G.), J. C. Gunson (P.P.G.M.), T. Macliver (P.G.), and E. Hanklnson (N.G. of New Swan Lodge, No. 4408), and many other representative people. The chief mourners were Mr. and Mrs. C Cham- berlian (parents), Messrs. Harold and Glen Chamberlain (brothers), the Misses May and Effie Chamberlain (sisters), Mr. J. Craig (grandfather), Mesdames W. A. and A. Chamberlain, T. Kinsg, H. Woods, G. Cooper, W. Butterworth, B. Jones and J. P. Craig (aunts), Messrs, W. A. Alf Cham- berlain, T. King, H. Woods, G. Cooper, W. Butterworth, B. Jones, and J. P. Craig (uncles), Messrs, B Cooper, Leslie Chamberlain, Colin Craig, H. Adams, J and H. Davies and the Misses May and Jean Craig (cousins). Wreaths were sent by Warrant Of- ficers, N.C.O.'s and men of the I.L.A.G.A. and Garrison Guards, Senior Naval Cadets, Officers and Staff of Naval Office Fremantle. Captain and Mrs Clare, Captain Morrison, Naval Reserves, Vic's Picture Co, the "Groper" crew, and by relatives and numerous friends. Many letters telegrams, cards, and other tokens of condolence have, also been received by the bereaved parents. 'The funeral ar- rangements were in tho hands of Messrs. Arthur E. He was born in Midland Junction and educated in Claremont. On the 4th May, 1918, he was married to Valentine Deforiet, daughter of Clementine and Martha Deforiet, of Marcinelle. He enlisted on the 5th April, 1916 an,d was attached to the 28th Battalion at Blackboy Camp. He left Fremantle in September, 1916, and arrived in England in November, proceeding to Salishury Camp. After completing his training, he crossed over to France, and was there until he was wounded at, Lagnicourt, in February, 1917, and sent into hospital. After the Armistice was signed he was sent back to Australia, arriving here on the 9th September, 1919. Prior to enlistment he was engaged in business as a grocer.5,1 |
