Note* | Bt Town lot 1866. Mariner. Went down in his ship "Dawn" while leaving the Irwin. Inquirer - 27 July 1870 The schooner Gift, from the Irwin River, came in yesterday with her flag at half-mast, It was soon ascertained that she had lost her Captain - Thomas O'Grady - who died suddenly on board, on Saturday last. As one of a large family of seafaring and highly respected young men, Mr. Thomas O'Grady was much respected, and a general regret is felt at his loss. Herald - 30 July 1870 ON Monday last, the schooner Gift from the Irwin River came into port with her flag half mast, indicating the melancholy death of her captain Mr. Thomas O'Grady. The deceased who had not attained his twenty seventh year, and was highly respected by all who knew him, feeling unwell just as the vessel was leaving the Irwin, went down to his cabin--complaining of a pain in his side he had one or two short fits. A seaman named Smith went below with him, and Mr. O'Grady took a little rum which he vomited, and immediately had another fit, during which he died. An inquest was held on the body a few hours after its arrival in port by Mr. Stone, J.P., in the presence of Dr. Dickie, who pronounced the deceased to have met his death from a diseased heart, and recorded the verdict of "Died by the visitation of God." Mr. O'Grady was apparently a strong and hearty man, was well known in Fremantle, and deeply respected as one of a numerous family of able and trustworthy seamen. His funeral was one of the most numerously and respectably attended that has taken place in our town; the Odd Fellows', to which Society the deceased belonged, following his remains, in a body. The burial service was performed by the Rev. Mr. Bostock. |
