Milit-Beg* | Henry Appleton began military service on 11 May 1916 at Bunbury, Western AustraliaG, 4010, Private, 32nd Battalion, Army
Private Henry Appleton (4010) was born at Guildford and educated at Bunbury. He is 22 years of age and is a son of George and Ellen Appleton, of Caledonian Avenue, Maylands. He enlisted at Bunbury April, 1916, and three months later embarked for England. He continued his training in Hurdcott, Camp, and on its completion early in 1917, crossed to France. He was in much heavy fighting, and while at Morlancourt was wounded . A grenade exploded at his feet and smashed two legs, ultimately causing their amputation. Private Appleton possesses a very happy disposition, and though so terribly wounded, is quite cheerful, making light of his troubles. His only means of comfortable transit is a wheel chair. At present he is learning bootmaking at the Soldiers' Vocational Training School.4,5 |
