(Witness) Burial | He witnessed the burial of James Irwin* Chamberlain on 20 November 1915 at Fremantle, Western AustraliaG; Anglican plot 330 THE LATE LEADING SIGNALMAN IRWIN JAMES CHAMBERLAIN, R.A.N. Owing probably to the pathetic circumstances, together wlth the popu- larity of the late Leading Signalman, Irwln James Chamberlain, R.A.N., the funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon last with naval honors, was one of the largest witnessed in Fre- mantle for many years. The deceased, who had Just reached his 23rd year, was born in Fremantle, and was a son of Mr. Charles Chamberlain, an old and respected identity of the Port. He had chosen a naval career, and was to have proceeded in a few weeks to the Eastern States to complete Ins course so as to become a chief petty officer. His brother, Gordon, is on active ser- vice at the Dardanelles. The long na- val cortege, headed by the firing party, moved from the residence of his parents, in Price-street, Fremantle, and preceded to the local cemetery where the remains were Interred in the Church of England portion. The casket, enshrouded with the Union Jack, was borne to the graveside by Yeomen Signalmen H'Callum, Lewis, Davey, Butchardt, and Bluejackets Tuxford and Ridley (of the Naval Re- serves). The naval chaplain, the Rev. Canon R. H. Moore, who conducted the servlce at the graveside, also delivered a most impressive and appropriate address, in the presence of over one thousand people. The M.U. I.O.O.F, service was read by Bro. H. Flindell, P.G.M., W.A.D, The religious ceremony was concluded by the sing- ing of a verse of deceased's favorite hymn, 'Lead, Kindly Light.' The three volleys were then fired, and the Last Post sounded.
