F, #2294, b. 21 September 1917, d. 24 February 1955
Residence* | Constance Mary Wright lived on 23 February 1955 at Northam, Western AustraliaG; "Rockvale."1 |
Note* | From Lorraine Eddy nee Lawrence
Constance was known to all as Connie, and she was Ethel and James' third child, born at home at 9 Kathleen St, Cottesloe. She began school at Swanbourne Primary aged 6 yrs, and finished at Princess May Girls High School aged 14 yrs. Her mother was her first employer at her Merredin store, and while living there she played hockey for the local team. She returned to Perth with her mother and worked for Joyce Bros; then when her Mother left for Northam she boarded with her sister Mrs. Gladys Fletcher for a short while. After that she moved in with her school friend Jean Nind's family in Cottesloe (who was related to her future husband Alfred Lawrence). She applied and sat for the Public Service entrance exams and on being successful was placed on the waiting list. About this time she broke her arm and being unable to work, and convalesced on Worker's Compensation, with her mother at the farm known as "Swan Hill" out of Northam. It was here that she met her future husband who was cousin to the owner of the property. When she returned to Perth she resigned from her job and returned to her mother, and helped on "Chiltern farm" until the lease expired after her step-father's death. She married Alfred in 1939 and moved into "Granny's Cottage" on "Rock-Vale" farm where she raised 4 of her 5 children. She played tennis for the Southern Brook & Jennapullin communities and worked hard to raise money for new halls to be built, but never took hockey up again. She was an excellent gardener with an extensive and highly productive vegetable and flower garden. She had a good knowledge of flowers and shrubs and favoured a cottage garden style. During her life she made many trips to the eastern states of the continent, and to visit her family. Her sister Gladys accompanied her to Singapore by ship, and she kept a diary of this trip. In 1951 she and Alfred drove their brand new Morris 6 sedan across the then unsealed highway to Melbourne and Sydney, and braved the notorius Nullabour. No mean feat! After a two year struggle with cancer she died in 1955 and was buried in the Northam Cemetery. |

William James Wright
M, #2295, b. 5 August 1923, d. 21 October 1977
Note* | William, known as Bill, was born at 9 Kathleen St, Cottesloe, and was just six years old when his father died of cancer. During the period after his father's death, when his mother faced severe finacial hardship, she temporarily placed the young boy in the care of "Swanleigh (Anglican) Home",in Middle Swan on the north-eastern outskirts of Perth, while she sorted out a livelihood. He and his sister Connie accompanied their mother to Merredin. While living with his mother and step-father in Northam he boarded in the town with his mother's cousin, Hettie Bartlett who lived on Doctors Hill in a house now known as "Jalna", and later his sister Dorothy, while he attended Northam High School. In late 1938 or '39 he moved with his mother to Victoria where he began an apprenticeship. He lied about his age and joined the AIF in 1940 seeing service in the Middle East and Damascas. After leave in March of 1942 he travelled to Queensland for jungle training before his unit left for the war front in Malaya. He met with an accident which resulted in him being discharged from the Army and rehabilitated into the building trade. He bought his first home at Spotswood when he married Marion Cooke in 1947, and lived there for many years, before building in Sunshine, where he died at an early age, several months after his sister Dorothy. He was cremated and has a plaque beside a rose at the Altona Crematorium. He had two children, the eldest married and resided in St. Albans and the youngest remained at Sunshine with her mother. |
