Note*Former wheatbelt farmer and Fremantle wharfie Joe Williams became the toast of Ascot racecourse when his bargain-priced gallopers emerged as Perth's thoroughbred stars. Williams owned dual Perth Cup winner Fait Accompli and brilliant sprinter Asian Beau, who won the Railway Stakes and set a 1200m record which has stood for 25 years.

Fait Accompli was a national racing celebrity when he beat strong interstate opposition in the first $100,000 Perth Cup (3200m), on January 3, 1972. The gelding had been bought for $3000 by Williams in a yearling sale at Claremont
Showground and went on to earn stakes of $105,000. Williams was living at Serpentine with his then wife Clare.
Asian Beau's career earnings were $268,000 for Williams. He cost $8000 as a yearling and won 12 of his 14 races for Williams.

He scored easy victories in the 1979 Winterbottom and Lee-Steere stakes, then started an odds-on favourite when winning the $100,000 Railway Stakes (1600m). WA Turf Club officials later paid Williams a $100,000 bonus which had been offered for a horse that could win the Winterbottom, Lee-Steere and Railway stakes treble. He later sold Asian Beau for $1 million. The celebrity owner, who also raced classy Perth gallopers Fait Divers and Supreme Spark in the 1970s and early 80s, was known as Lucky Joe in racing circles. But it was astute judgment of young horses, rather than luck, which contributed to Williams' sustained success. His ability to accurately assess a yearling was developed in his years of rural life. Born in Goomalling and raised at Wongan Hills, he was from a farming family.

"Joe served with the army in the 1939-45 war," said his cousin, Maurice Maloney. "Then he farmed at Jerramungup before shifting to the metropolitan area and joining staff at the former Byford munitions depot. He later became a waterside worker at Fremantle. "He bought racehorses and became an Ascot VIP. But he was very conservative in private. In the Wheatbelt he had been brought up to never tolerate mistreatment of animals. When his gallopers were retired, Joe ensured they went to good homes. He insisted that the owners take great care in feeding and grooming."

Bert Harrison, who trained Williams' gallopers at Armadale, fondly remembers their glory days of the 1970s. "Fait Accompli won five of his six races before the 1970 Perth Cup and~ started favourite in the big race," he said. "He was ridden by Ken Bradley and won convincingly. The horse went on to win more races at Ascot and Belmont but faced good Victorian stayers when tackling the 1972 Perth Cup and started at 12/1.

"WATC committeemen had stunned Australian racing by boosting the cup stake from $25,000 to $100,000. At that time, it almost matched Melbourne Cup prizemoney. Fait Accompli had a memorable win, ridden by the late Ray Oliver."
Oliver, the father of WA-born champion Melbourne jockey Damien Oliver, was killed in a Kalgoorlie race fall three years later. His eldest son Jason, a prominent Perth jockey, died after a fall at the Belmont barrier trials in October2002.
Williams won 11 races, including the 1975 Bunbury Stakes and 1976 Perth Lord Mayor's Cup with Fait Divers. Supreme Spark scored five wins Asian Beau, was regularly ridden by jockey Graeme Webster sen., began racing in 1977 and won at 10 of his first 11 starts. He set his State 1200m record when clocking lmin.8.52sec. in the 1979 Prince of Wales Stakes which he won by 6 lengths.

"Joe was very proud the record still stands," said Williams' widow, Muriel. "He loved his horses and days at the races. Fait Accompli was retired to a family property at Herne Hill and lived a wonderful life until 33. Joe regularly checked his old champ. On a day after Joe visited him six years ago, we received a call that Fait Accompli had died." Mrs Williams recalls that Joe always dressed immaculately and she arranged for him to be cremated in his favourite Ascot suit.
Joe Williams is survived by Muriel and his sisters, Teresa, Ronnie, Eileen and Gwenn. on 26 February 2004 at Perth, Western AustraliaG.4
