Note* | A Rose By Any other name Rose Hannah met Charles Morgan in Fremantle sometime during 1907, fell pregnant to him and had a male child, Charles William Morgan (Hopkins) on the 22nd February, 1908. Most of the information registered on Charles William's birth certificate is false. Rose Hannah never married Charles Morgan. Rose Hannah was abandoned by Charles Morgan who returned to his home in Ballarat, Victoria and was certainly working in the Ballarat mines by 1910. He died on the 10th July, 1910. Hence Rose Hannah was alone with an illegitimate child. She was now working as a domestic at either thr Pier or Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle and we know the stories about two year old "Little Billy" wandering around the wet end of Fremantle charming the Hopkins family. Charles William also told the story that he wandered into the Fremant Court House on one ocassion and interrupted procedings and the judge ordered Sergeant William Francis Hopkins to take him in charge, which he did, literally. Rose Hannah Fostered the boy to William Francis Hopkins and Amelia Hopkins (nee Adams) and the exact circumstances of that transaction will never be known. Rose Hannah left for the goldfields and married Francis Graham Hopkins (no relation to the Hopkins family to which Charles William was fostered). The marriage took place in Boulder in 1910. There is no problem here. Although Charles Morgan did not die until 10th July, 1910 it is clear Rose Hannah had not married him abd therefore was legally able to marry Francis Graham Hopkins. Rose Hannah re-enters Charles William's life just once more circa 1917 when she has a meeting with Amelia Hopkins in the front room of 96 Hubble Street, East Fremantle. Whether she was seeking to be reunited with her son (she had two children by Francis Graham Hopkins by this time) or was seeking a financial settlement from the Hopkins family we will never know. She never reappeared in his life again although she lived the rest of her life in Fremantle, as did her son, Charles William.
