Within eighteen months of being in Fremantle a daughter Elizabeth was born and in the same year mother, baby Elizabeth and sister Ruth would all die due to diphtheria. Wife Elizabeth died 4 November 1831 at Fremantle. The youngest son George junior died in 1838. By the late 1840's George owned some of the best agricultural land in the district which he called 'Grass Valley' (later known as the 'Wattles'). Son William departed for the Eastern Colonies per the 'Queen of Netherlands' on 10 March 1853. In 1871 George purchased the Farmers Home Hostel (now the Shamrock Hotel). He took up residence there, became blind and died a month before his 82nd birthday in 1879. George purchased for son Charles a farm in the district known as 'Jurendine'. He married Hannah Martin whose parents William and Lucy Martin arrived aboard the 'Hooghly' in February 1830. They raised 16 children, 6 sons and 10 daughters, leaving 1000 acres to each of his 5 remaining sons on his death in 1893. His eldest son George died a few months before him.6 |
