Note*Milly Martindale records that the Stewart family, living at Ross, Tasmania, claimed to be related to Scottish aristocracy, and their claim to a title and a fortune in chancery was lost when a whaler went down in Bass Strait and all the family papers were lost. Interestingly, Andrea Carrail has found one George Stewart arriving on a whaling ship. Must follow up. However she says that there are about eight convict George Stewarts and four others who emigrated. Makes it hard to find the right one. Andrea is investigating whether he came with the 1/17th Leicestershire Regiment.
I have viewed the microfilm of George and Sarah's Marriage Certificate, and now have photocopy. Details are as follows:-
Marriage solemnized at St. David's, Hobart Town. Number 17 (now 2777)
George Stewart of this Parish, Batchelor
Sarah Mortimer of this Parish, Spinster
Married in this church by banns. (no consent given so assume Sarah was legal age)
this seventh day of October in the year 1835 by me, William Bedford?, Senior Chaplain.
George Stewart signed his name. Sarah Mortimer made her mark.
Witnesses were Patrick Main of Hobart Town and William Holdship of Hobart Town. (William Holdship was the witness for many other marriages around this date, so can't assume he had any connection with George. However, Patrick Main only appears once, so may be a friend/acquaintance.)
I can find no record of either George or Sarah being convicts or Ticket of Leave holders, and if they were it should have been recorded on the marriage certificate, along with the ship they were transported on, as were others on the same microfilm. Can find no record of immigration for George nor can I find George and Sarah's deaths.
Only possible death record is for a George Edward Stewart who died at Bothwell, central Tasmania, in November 1850, aged 45. 58/1850 RGD 35. Hope it's not our George as he died of apoplexy brought on by intoxication!3
