Bon grew up in Condah where her father leased"Calstock," a property of 300 acres. Around 1920, the family moved to Drumborg where for some years they ran the Post Office. One of Bon's chores was to ride her pony to Heywood to pick up the mail. She also delivered telegrams on her pony and was Post mistress for a time prior to her marriage. Bowls played an enormous part in Bon's life. This list of some of her achievements was found among her bowls memorabilia. Heywood Ladies' Bowls Club: President - 7 years, Vice-President - 3 years, Club Captain - 3 years ,Life Member, Association Delegate for the Far Western Ladies' Bowls - 2 years, Member of the State Council - VLBA - 1 year, Heywood Club Champion - 5 times, Association Champion - 1 year (Far Western Ladies' Bowls), Life Member - Far Western Ladies' Bowls Association, Won as Skip FWLBA pairs and rinks and runner up for both. Bon was a Foundation Member of the Heywood Bowls Club and after the death of Don in 1963, devoted her spare time to the betterment of bowling. A willing worker, she would assist when and wherever required - from working in the kitchen to helping new bowlers. She was awarded her 25 years Service Medal. Much of her life was devoted to caring for others. As a young girl it was her duty to give her father his daily insulin injections for his diabetes. When she and Don moved into the Moore home at Sunnyside she nursed both William and flora until their deaths. Her brother, Clarrie lived next door to Bon in Heywood, when her sister, Jessie McKee, who had been living with Arch, passed away, Bon became responsible for looking after Clarrie. In later years Bon developed an aneurism on the aorta. She elected to have an operation to have this repaired, however she did not recover from the surgery.1 |
