He was awarded the Military Cross - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of the left team in a raid by his battalion. With 20 other ranks he entered the enemy's trenches, rushed a machine gun before it could open on them, killed the gun team, and captured the gun. He then led his party through an enemy trench, killed more of the enemy, and secured a prisoner. All this time he maintained liaison with the right team, and finally brought his party back to the lines in perfect order. He showed fine courage and ability to command.'
