Story* | George Hayman is my great great grandfather. To date I have recorded 760 descendants of George and his two wives, mostly in Western Australia. He did it pretty tough back in England, serving eight years in prison before he was transported. The newspaper account of his trial has him accused of an unusual crime which had allegedly occurred twelve months earlier!! It looks a bit fishy to me. George was issued a license to to operate the 15 ton cargo barge "Ark", which he owned, on 2/1/1865. I haven't found any prior references to work done by George but presumably he must have spent some time associated with Swan River cargo carrying to be in the position to own a barge of that size. In 1870 George built and subsequently operated the 28.5 tonne cutter "Surprise" which was 60 feet long. George sold the Surprise in 1880 for 380 pounds. In researching property that was sold by George Hayman in 1865 for 1050 pounds, I discovered a number of interesting facts. The property was actually owned and sold by George's stepson George Hayman the younger but who was actually born as George Pindar to Sabina Pindar and perosn unknown in 1861. When George (Snr) and Sabina married in 1863 he took young George in as his own. The deal may have been sweetened by the fact that George Pindar had been left Perth Building Lot V28 and half lot V29 by Charles Wittenoom. It was effectively in trust for George until he truned 21. A declaration by George Hayman (snr) as part of the transfer of land to George Hayman the younger in 1883 after he had turned 21 said that the family had lived on the property for 19 years and had paid no rent. This would have the family (George, Sabina and young George) moving in straight after George and Sabina were married, 3 years before Charles Wittenoom died in 1866 and possibly 6 months before Frederick died in Oct 1863. In is not clear from the declaration of George Hayman the younger as to whether or not he and his mother had been living on the property prior to 1863 but given that it looks like George moved in after the wedding so I think they were. The property (V28/V29 portion) was left to Charles by his brother Frederick when he died in 1863. Frederick, who was a batchelor, had lived at 858 Hay St on a property known as the Bungalow which at that time extended between Hay and Murray St. The back of the property in Murray St is almost opposite V28/V29 on the other side of the road. Sabina came to the state in 1853 and found work as a servant. It appears likely that she was working for Frederick Wittenoom before he died. Charles Wittenoom was married in 1860 when George was conceived and he was living in York. Charles did visit his brother so it is possible that he is George's father but it is also possible that Frederick was the father and the Charles looked after George on Frederick's behalf. The timing of when George (snr) moved in suggests to me that Frederick is the most likely father for young George.10,11 |
